5 Things You Should Know If You Have Fleas

Tips For Getting Rid Of Fleas

Fleas are one of those insects that, unfortunately, don’t care too much what time of year it is. They don’t die off as much as other self-respecting insects do, because they have their ways of keeping warm and surviving. For example, they stay alive by camping on your pet’s fur or inside your nice cozy home. For this reason, we are still getting quite a few calls from customers that have flea problems. Most of our customers call after trying various do-it-yourself methods and can sometimes make the problem even worse. Since we have seen enough to know that there are many common mistakes made when you discover that you have fleas, we want to provide you with some things that you should know before trying to tackle them on your own. Just by knowing these simple things, you can save yourself some time, money, and anxiety.

1) Flea Bombs Can Make Your Problem Worse

Flea bombs seem like a good idea. When I was a kid, my parents will let them off all the time, and they did seem to work (I mean, how could anything survive after shooting toxic gas all over the place, right?). The problem with flea bombs, aside from the nasty fumes, is that they don’t tend to kill the fleas. They are just repellent with hardly any residual that can push the fleas deeper into walls, baseboards, furniture, etc. You might feel like you did a good job and start patting yourself on the back. But, wait a few weeks. They will be back.

2) You Get What You Pay For With Flea Products

Some products that you can buy at the store will help you. First and foremost, flea medication for your pets. Stick with good brands that are proven to work like Advantage or Frontline and stay away from the “bargain brands.” Also, some of the flea powders that you sprinkle on your carpets can do you some good, but again, the cheap stuff doesn’t seem to get the job done.

3) Vacuum Often

A vacuum cleaner is your best friend when you have fleas. We recommend vacuuming once a day. The reason it is crucial is that flea eggs do not adhere to anything and can roll right off your pets back and land wherever they are walking, spreading the problem. Since none of the flea products that you can buy at the store can kill a flea egg, it is essential to pick them up and dispose of them by using the vacuum. The other benefit of using a vacuum is the vibration that causes the eggs to hatch quicker. Assuming that some flea treatment has been applied, if the eggs hatch quicker, they will encounter the flea product while it is still fresh.

4) Fleas Might Be Coming From Your Crawl Space

This is probably something you have not considered. Many times we will treat customers home that does not have pets, and they are left scratching their head on how they got the problem. Sometimes the answer lies in the crawl space where rats, mice, or (even worse) raccoons can be living. You think that pets get fleas bad, but non-domesticated animals have it far worse. These animals not only have fleas but can do a lot of damage to a person’s crawl space. So, if you have fleas, but don’t have pets, be sure to check this out.

5)  Don’t Wait Too Long Before Getting Some Help

If you try the do-it-yourself method but are not having any success, you should consider having a pest control company come in and take care of the problem. Fleas can reproduce at a staggering rate and will get out of control without proper intervention.

If you are struggling with a flea infestation and would like some pest control help in Portland, Oregon or Vancouver, Washington, please give us a call, and we would be glad to help!
