How To Get Rid Of Fruit Flies

Fruit flies in Portand OregonFruit flies are a major nuisance for all of us.  We’ve all had them swarm relentlessly around our kitchens, land on our food and generally drive us crazy.  They can seem like a never ending plague from the days of Moses at times and they sure can be tough to get rid of.  Maybe you have tried a little bit of everything to stop your kitchen from becoming infested with flies and nothing has worked.  Well, let me just have a moment of your time and let me run down some proven methods for making your home fly-free.

Where do fruit flies come from?

Fruit of course!  Well, not really, but they are programmed to look for overripe fruit because it is in the organic matter that they lay their eggs.  Okay, so you have tried getting rid of the fruit bowl on the counter, but it doesn’t have to be fruit, it can be the slime left over in your garbage can or the leftovers in your garbage disposal.  Consider this, a fruit flies’ entire life cycle is encapsulated in just 8 days and since your kitchen has been swarming with flies for the past several weeks, these things are laying their eggs somewhere, right?  So, let’s think about where that can be happening and do something about it!

Start rinsing food containers before tossing them

Flies like to drink some of the same things that you do.  They will gladly finish off your beer or soda can for you that you tossed in the garbage.  Start rinsing out cans and food containers before throwing them in the garbage or recycling cans and eliminate a huge potential food source.

Clean the drain

As I mentioned earlier, flies lay their eggs in organic matter.  Your drains are a big source of organic matter that they commonly will go to.  You can fix this problem by dumping boiling water down your drain.

Make a trap!

All the other things that I have mentioned work as a preventative measure, but this is what you need to do to kill the adults.  You can make a fruit fly trap by taking a small cup and filling it with about ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar.  Next, take a plastic bag and put it over the top of the cup and secure it in place with a rubber band.  Lastly, take some scissors and puncture a hole in the top of the bag small enough for a fruit fly to get in.  Place this trap in the area of the most activity and you should see them start to die off.

There are a lot of ways to go about killing fruit flies and several variations of concoctions that will draw them in, but the most important measure that you can take is to keep your kitchen clean and free of food debris.  If you find that you just cannot get the problem under control, I would invite you to give us a call and we would be happy to help you  with all your pest control needs!
